“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe” – Hebrews 12:28
The writer of Hebrews gives a powerful description of the type of worship expected by the Lord. Near the end of the verse, he commands that this worship is to be given with reverence. This word is translated from the Greek word eulabeia. Interestingly, in Greek mythology Eulabeia was the spirit and personification of discretion, caution, and circumspection. In choosing this word, the writer is basically stating that worship must be offered with “holy caution.” Worship is not of our own making, but rather is to be offered according to the standards given by God Himself. When we approach God, we must approach Him with “holy caution,” offering the kind of worship He has commanded with an attitude pleasing to Him. Sincere worship is never judged based on what “we get out of it.” Sincere worship comes only when the Lord is the focal point of our attention and worshiped as He has directed.
