Is it impossible to lose our salvation? No, not if we profane “the blood of the covenant by which [we] were sanctified” (Hebrews 10:29). But a better question for those loved by God is, is it possible for one of His faithful children to be separated from Him?
If a man will divest his mind of all thoughts of this church or that church, this creed or that creed, and simply open the Book and do what it teaches him, God will “add” that man to his church.
That does not completely explain the second sentence, though. “He saw it and was glad.” If Jesus was strictly speaking in the sense that Abraham would see Jesus’ day from his place in the afterlife, Jesus could have said, “Abraham is seeing it now and is glad.” Instead Jesus uses the past tense.
What can we learn from this account? That God responds to the person who appeals to him for justification, not because of that person’s righteousness, but because of God’s grace, His mercy, and His desire to forgive.
