It is so easy to be carried away, either in fear by the uncertainty of the future, or in ecstasy by the charisma of certain leaders that you can lose yourself.
I do think the young people are the future of the church, but I am willing to take it a step further: I think young are the present of the church.
In deciding questions of a spiritual nature, it is always appropriate to ask: “What would Jesus do?”
He saw why Jesus had to come into the world and why He had to die in our stead. He became a new man in Christ with a new set of values and a new way of looking at things. He learned to walk by faith in God rather than by human wisdom.
But if God is not preparing us for a pop quiz at the Judgment, then what is the purpose of the Bible?
“Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand; but I know who holds tomorrow, and I know who holds my hand.”
Psalms is far more than a book from which to pull pithy statements for greeting cards; it is a divinely inspired model of approaching God and dealing with life’s problems.
Walking with God means to
be faithful, obedient and committed to Him. Or, as Micah wrote in Micah 6:8,
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of
you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Perhaps Mark would like for his readers to recognize a distinct difference between the Lord’s apostles and the sailors transporting Jonah to Tarshish
