Generally speaking, we don’t pray like the Psalmists prayed, and I wonder if we’re missing more than just their language when their thoughts do not influence our thoughts.
Psalms is far more than a book from which to pull pithy statements for greeting cards; it is a divinely inspired model of approaching God and dealing with life’s problems.
While the writers wished for the defeat of evil, they asked God to be the one who did the punishment. This allowed them the privilege of doing good toward an enemy, while at the same time asking God to be the one to take vengeance.
A good place to begin determining the “point” of the book of Psalms would be to look at the beginning.
